Our Mission, Explained

Our mission

When we say we’re a great green alternative choice for travel, we mean it. So, we’ve created our own mission:

To enable a global community of pet people to reimagine travel, prioritising the happiness of animals and reducing our environmental impact through pet caring and home sharing.

So, what does this mean? We’ll break it down for you, serve up some chewable climate stats, and explain a bit more about what we’ve been up to behind the scenes...

Our mission, explained

“To enable a global community of pet people to reimagine travel”

We've connected hundreds of thousands of pet parents and pet sitters worldwide through their mutual trust and love of animals, facilitating more than 10 million nights of pet sitting across over 140 countries!

As well as saving our members more than half a billion in accommodation and pet care costs, we’ve enabled our sitters to have unique experiences in real homes and communities - that’s something a hotel just can’t provide.

“Prioritising the happiness of animals”

Pets are happier at home - and vets agree! Just ask TV Vet, Dr. Scott Miller:

“Animals respond to a new carer better than a new environment. Most animals are particularly bonded to their home and the smells that are present there and also the smells of their owners, even when they’re not there. So for me, it’s best if they can stay put, stay in their own surroundings, and be looked after by a carer. And that’s what TrustedHousesitters provides.”

“Reducing our environmental impact by pet caring and home sharing"

Hotels require energy every hour of every day in order to provide guests with constant access to heating, hot water and electricity. Many hotels also have on-site restaurants, gyms, spas, pools and more that also require a lot of energy to run which means that a hotel’s energy usage is typically much higher than a residential property.

Whilst spending the night in a residential property is significantly more energy efficient than in a hotel, exact figures will vary depending on factors such as, the size of the home and hotel, what additional facilities they each have, whether they are powered by renewable, or standard energy and location.

Let’s talk stats!

It’s all well and good saying we’re super for sustainability, but we need some top-notch travel truths and stats to back us up. And boy do we have some tail-wagging stats for you...

Approximate nightly energy usage

7 nights in a big hotel costs 0.18 tCO2e vs 7 nights in an average home costs 0.021 tCO2e, saving 0.16 tCO2e every 7 nights.

Approximate nightly energy usage divided by number of bedrooms

Spending the night in a residential home vs a hotel can reduce accommodation-related carbon emissions by up to 88%.

4 million night of energy usage per room

TrustedHousesitters has facilitated more than 4 million nights of pet sitting, saving up to 93,700 tCO2e in accommodation-related energy usage, the equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 468,500 tree seedlings grown for 10 years.*

*Based on the following assumptions: 1. All nights are spent in the UK 2. All nights spent pet sitting would have otherwise been spent in a large hotel.

UK hotel energy usage information gathered from the Department of Environment and Utility Bidder. UK home energy usage information gathered from Ofgem. CO2e costs gathered from carbon accounting software compliant with GHG protocol and GRI standards. Information up to date in December 2023 and specific to the UK.
