Do Fish Need Names?

Naming our cats, dogs and other land-dwelling pets goes without saying – but what to name a fish? Can they even hear us call them? The short answer is: No, they can’t. And even if they could, they probably wouldn’t know you’re addressing them.

While it is true that some species of fish, for example, Bettas, Oscars or Goldfish, can learn tricks, most will just go – excuse us, swim – about their day and not mind you too much.

Does that mean you shouldn’t give your aquatic buddies cute fish names? Oh, certainly not! Naming our pets isn’t just something we do so we can call them, it’s also because to us, they are much more than ‘just pets’.
