Can dogs eat fennel

Updated 16/09/2024

Fennel is a tasty herb that we often add to salads, stews, and sauces. It can be used not only for its distinct licorice-like flavor but also to soothe a variety of digestive issues including heartburn and inflammation. But what about our furry friends? Can dogs have fennel too? Let’s find out!

Is fennel safe for dogs?

Can dogs eat fennel? Absolutely! Dogs can enjoy fennel raw or cooked, fresh or dried, and every part of the herb is safe for them to eat – from the bulbs and stalks to the leaves and seeds. When the right amount is used, fennel can offer some fantastic health benefits for your pup. Just be sure to check with your vet before adding it to your furry friend’s diet.

Can dogs eat fennel bulb?

The bulb is the large white part of the fennel which we often slice up to add to salads and stews, and it’s safe for dogs to eat.

Can dogs eat fennel seeds?

Yes, dried fennel seeds are also suitable for pooch pals. They can be used to make a tea for your furry friend – simply add one teaspoon of seeds to eight ounces of boiling water, and leave for a few minutes to infuse. Add two to four teaspoons of the fennel seed tea to your pooch pal’s water bowl, but don’t go overboard, as too much can cause diarrhea.

The benefits of adding fennel to your dog’s food

Fennel has plenty of benefits for humans, but what about our four-legged friends?

  • Can be used to help freshen their breath.
  • Supports a healthy digestive system.
  • Increases the absorption of iron which aids red blood cell production and plays other important roles in keeping your dog healthy.
  • Packed with vitamins A and C, which are strong antioxidants that can help fight free radicals and keep the cardiovascular system healthy.
  • Rich in potassium, which helps organs work their best and supports a healthy heart, muscles, and nerves.
  • May help with symptoms of arthritis.
  • Low in calories.

How to give your dog fennel

The health benefits of fennel for dogs are obvious, but they might not love its strong flavor. Once you’ve got the thumbs-up from the vet, you can try making a light fennel tea with dried seeds to mix into your furry friend’s water. You might also want to sprinkle some seeds on top of your pup’s food, or slice the fennel bulb into tiny pieces and cook it to mix into their food.

Remember, you should always consult your vet before including fennel in your dog’s diet. While it has plenty of health benefits, it’s important to get the right amount for your pup’s size and weight, and it may not be suitable for all dogs.

Meet our veterinary expert, Liam

This article has been checked by veterinarian Dr Liam Bullock BVSc (Hons) MRCVS.

As a small animal vet, Liam has spent time working in both first-opinion and referral-level practices. After gaining a strong affinity for educating owners about their pets, Liam decided to dedicate some of his non-clinical time to tutoring students, who were preparing for exams or struggling at school. By combining a passion for teaching others, and a keen interest in raising awareness about animal health issues, Liam decided to begin writing veterinary content. This now also allows him to raise awareness of important animal health issues outside of the consultation room.
