For many, pets are considered family — part of the team, and in some (most) cases, treated just like children. In fact, the global pet care market was valued at $207 billion in 2025*, and is projected to grow to $483.5 billion by 2035**.
These pampered pups are part of the family unit, but pet parents are going even further to shower their pets with love. They’re splashing out on luxury services, special diets, and even luxurious names.
At TrustedHousesitters, we know that if your pet is used to a pampered life, their home comforts and routine are more important than ever — while you’re on vacation, and at home. That’s why we’ve launched this campaign, to uncover exactly how indulged pets are across the U.S.
By analyzing the number of pet services (excluding vets), average annual pet spend per household, monthly luxury pet searches on Google, and luxury pet names, we set out to identify which places in America treat their pets the most.

Colorado pampers their pets the most
Colorado soared to the top of the ranking with an overall score of 84.3/100. In this state, they’re in the top 10 spenders on their pets. The average annual spend per pet-owning household is $1,556, so pets in this state are clearly accustomed to a life of luxury.
Colorado also ranked 3rd overall, just behind New Hampshire and Maine, with 48 pet services per 100k population. And these aren’t your regular high-end veterinary practices; these are top-end grooming and treat parlours.
And lastly, Colorado came out as 3rd overall for the number of pets with ‘luxury’ names (28), like Duke, Lady, and Queen — it’s no surprise these pups are subject to a life of glamour.
Montana ranks second for pet pampering in the U.S.
Montana ranked second, with a score of 78.4/100. Pet parents in Montana spend even more than in Colorado, with an average annual spend of $1627. Montana also has some of the highest monthly search volumes (54 per 100k people) for luxury pet services, with an average of 480 searches per month for pet-friendly hotels and 30 for premium pet food.
Despite being the 4th largest U.S. state, it’s one of the least populated, and even so, the numbers show that this state is going above and beyond to make its pets' lives as premium as possible.
Oregon has the highest average pet spend per year
Oregon, in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, is known for its mountainous landscape and bustling capital, Salem. It’s also known as the “Beaver State”, which is very on-brand for this state, which is obsessed with animals, ranking 3rd overall for pampering pets.
At $1701, this state has the highest average annual pet spend in the top three states, hinting that the pet parents here are sparing no cash on showering their pets with love.
And as well as the monetary expenditure, the bond here is real, with an average of 1600 searches each month for pet-friendly hotels, showing Oregon pet moms and dads struggle leaving pets behind. And who can blame them?
The top 3 states spending the most on their pets
We wanted to know when it came to pampered pets, which states pet parents were spending the most on their beloved furry family members, and these were the results:
Average annual spend on pets per pet-owning household ($)
- South Dakota- $2153
- Illinois- $2056
- Nevada- $1889
South Dakota pet parents spend over $2100 each year
South Dakota leads the nation in pet spending, with an average annual spend of $2,153. Pet owners in this state are clearly giving their pets the VIP treatment, investing in the finer things in life.
Not far behind were Illinois and Nevada, proving that when it comes to splashing out on luxury pet needs, it isn’t the typical high-population states. Still, it’s rural South Dakota, urban Nevada, and bustling Illinois.
Despite healthy budgets for their pets, neither state ranked first overall for the most pampered, showing that spending alone doesn't make pets overly pampered.
The top 3 states with the most pet services
When we say pet services, we’re not talking about the standard veterinary practice or grooming appointment. These services are an example of pure pampering and include doggy daycare facilities, pet taxi/pet transportation, and even pet exercise classes.
Pet service businesses registered per 100k people (not including vets)
- New Hampshire- 60
- Maine- 51
- Colorado- 48
New Hampshire leads the way in luxury pet services in the U.S.
New Hampshire has 60 luxury pet services per capita, ranging from pet boarding to personal dog walking services. The East Coast dominated the top 2 spots, and it wasn't New York in second; it was Maine with 51.
Of course, all pets attend the vet and receive regular grooming, but pets in these states are truly looked after by personal pet sitters, trainers, and even private transport.
Colorado took one for the West, ranking highest with 48 pet services per capita, proving across the country that pet parents are going above and beyond to ensure their pets live to the fullest.
The top 3 states with the most searches for luxury pet services
Treating your pet to a luxury groom or a personal trainer shows one level of pampering, but we also wanted to find out which states are most curious about treating their pets. These were the top three states with the highest searches per month, from things like dog spas to dog birthday parties:
Average Google monthly luxury pet searches per 100,000 people
- Wyoming- 89
- Virginia- 83
- Colorado- 58
Wyoming sees the highest monthly average searches for luxury pet services
Colorado is the state pampering its pets the most overall, but when it comes to searches for luxury pet services, neighboring Wyoming ranks highest, with 89 searches per 100k people.
Wyoming sees an average of 390 monthly searches for pet-friendly hotels, as well as searches for dog birthday parties, pet spas, and pet gifts.
Over on the East Coast, Virginia took the crown for the second most searches, contributing to the number, which was 260 for premium pet food and 140 for ‘pet spa near me’ queries each month.
Pet owners are clearly shifting toward a new wave of pampering, towards luxury services. Pet parents are keen to understand how to go one step further to make their pets feel like royalty.
The top 3 states with the most luxury pet names
Pampering and treating pets like children is one thing, but how many of these lucky animals have been named accordingly? We’ve analyzed our internal data to find out exactly which state is going this one step further:
California is home to 100 pets named with luxury in mind
In California, we found that more than 100 pets had luxury names. Among the most popular were Duke (33), followed by Prince (18) and Princess (16), and even one Treasure!
It’s clear that California has really taken the ‘treating pets like children’ literally and is even naming their pets with monarchy-themed titles.
Florida ranked second with 35 pets named solely for a pampered life, and the most popular name in the state was Duke (13), followed by Princess (7).
Colorado's most popular luxury name was again Duke (11), but in this state, they’re also loving the luxury female names, with Lady in a close second (10).
Home comforts keep pets happy
If this data tells us anything, it’s that so many of us see our pets as family. And what better way to treat your pet like the royalty they are, than keeping them where vets agree they’re happiest — at home, with a trusted house sitter?
We connect pet parents seeking trusted in-home pet care with sitters seeking unique travel experiences. Pets stay calm and comfortable in familiar surroundings, while sitters can explore new corners of the world with pets for company wherever they stay.
Personalized, one-to-one care matters
A pet sitter provides one-on-one, personalized care, tailoring routines, walk schedules, and playtime to keep pets feeling safe and secure while their pet parents are away.
Peace of mind for pet parents and better well-being for pets
With TrustedHousesitters, pet parents enjoy time away knowing their furry family members are being cared for by a genuine, like-minded pet sitter. Pet parents stay in the loop with regular updates from their sitters, and pets get to stay at home where they feel calm and safe.

Pet services per 100K people – Data from the U.S. Census Bureau (NAICS 812910) was used to count pet-related businesses per state, including pet grooming (washing, clipping, styling), pet boarding/kennels, doggy day care facilities, pet sitting services, dog walking services, pet obedience and training services, pet exercise services, and pet taxi/pet transportation (non-medical). Totals were then standardised by state population to calculate the number of services per 100,000 people.
Average annual pet expenditure per pet-owning household – Estimated using regional spending data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey, combined with state-level pet ownership rates from World Population Review. Total household figures were sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey to estimate the number of pet-owning households per state. Regional BLS averages were adjusted using each state’s ownership rate to estimate annual spend per pet-owning household.
Luxury pet search demand per 100K people – Using keywordtool.io, we analysed average monthly Google search volumes for: “premium pet food”, “pet spa near me”, “pet friendly hotel”, “gifts for pet”, and “dog birthday party”. Searches were combined and standardised by state population to calculate average monthly searches per 100,000 people.
Pets with luxury names – Internal pet registration data was analysed to count pets with luxury-themed names, including: Queen, Prince, Duke, Lady, Princess, Diamond, King, Duchess, Sir, and Treasure.
