Does your four-legged friend go nuts for doggy treats? What better way to show Fido you love him than by showering him with gifts (and treats) of the homemade variety? These easy peanut butter dog treat recipes are quick to make and they taste furr-tastic - the proof is in the pudding!

But how can you make sure your homemade dog treats are safe for dogs to eat? Before you even get started on your peanut butter dog treats recipe, it’s important to check the ingredients of the products you are using. Some nut butter brands sneak in unnecessary artificial sweeteners, and peanut butter containing xylitol is toxic for pups. When made from just peanuts and salt, peanut butter is safe and healthy for pups to eat, but you can easily replace it with pumpkin or sweet potato if you want to.

Next, if your furry friend can’t eat wheat or gluten, you can replace all-purpose flour with oat flour, almond flour, or coconut flour (but note that it may alter the texture of your dog cookies). Have some fun with these recipes for peanut butter dog treats, the best part about making them yourself is that you know they’re “au natural” - that means no nasty additives, no over-processed ingredients, and nothing that you don’t want your furry friend ingesting. Whether you need to “butter” up your furry friend or you’re teaching your smart cookie some cool new tricks, these delicious homemade dog treats are the way to your four-legged friend’s heart. Get your bone cookie cutters at the ready and put on your chef’s hat as we spill the beans for these scrumptious peanut butter dog treats recipes.

1. Quick and easy peanut butter treats for dogs recipe

Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

2 eggs

1/4 cup water

Method:

  • Preheat your oven to 350 F.
  • In a large bowl, gently combine your flour, peanut butter, and eggs.
  • Add water to the mixture one tablespoon at a time until it has the correct consistency to roll out.
  • Roll out the dough and cut it into roughly 36 fun shapes, from dog bones to puppy paw prints.

Place your treats onto a baking tray and cook for about 15 minutes, or until the bottom of the biscuit starts to darken, et voilà! You’ve got yourself some paw-lickingly good peanut butter dog treats!

2. Homemade peanut butter dog biscuit recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup whole wheat flour

1/2 cup peanut butter

1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce or mashed banana

1/4 cup vegetable, chicken, or beef stock

Method:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, peanut butter, and applesauce, before adding in the stock. Form the mixture into a thick dough with your hands.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about a quarter of an inch thick.
  • Cut your cookies out and place them onto your baking sheet
  • Bake for 18 minutes, or until your cookies are golden brown for a *chef’s kiss* your dog will love

3. Frosted peanut butter dog treat recipe

Ingredients for the cookies:

2½ cups whole wheat flour

1 large egg

1 cup peanut butter

1 cup water

2 tablespoons honey

Ingredients for the frosting:

2 tablespoons peanut butter

1 tablespoon honey

⅓ cup cornstarch (can also use potato starch or arrowroot powder)

3-4 tablespoons hot water

Method:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Mix together the flour and egg before adding in the peanut butter, water, and honey. You can use your hands or a spoon to bring the ingredients together to form a firm, sticky dough.
  • Sprinkle your work surface with flour and roll out your dough to about half an inch thick. Use a dog bone cookie cutter or a knife to cut out some paw-some shapes - don’t worry about leaving much space in between as they won’t expand or rise much.
  • Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • As you wait for your cookies to cool, it’s time to make the frosting. Combine the peanut butter and honey in a bowl and heat in the microwave for 15 seconds at a time, stirring in between until melted.
  • Mix in the cornstarch until combined.
  • Add the water little by little until you have reached the consistency you want.
  • For the icing on the cake, drizzle the frosting onto the cooled cookies or use a piping bag for more accuracy.

4. Peanut butter banana dog treats recipe

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups oat flour or old-fashioned rolled oats

1/2 cup peanut butter

1 large ripe banana (or 2 medium bananas)

Method:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • If using rolled oats, blend them until you have a fine flour.
  • In a large mixing bowl, mash the banana together with the peanut butter. Add the oat flour and mix until well combined. The dough should be firm and sticky, if it’s too dry, add a little more peanut butter to the mix.
  • Roll out the dough until it's about a quarter of an inch thick, and cut into shapes.
  • Bake for 15 minutes, and allow to cool before doing that all-important taste test.

Whichever peanut butter dog treat recipe you choose, your kitchen will be filled with the delicious smell of baking, making it difficult not to tuck in straight away! If you and your furry friend don’t gobble up the whole batch in one go, most of these peanut butter dog treats will keep at room temperature for three to five days, in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two months, and frozen for up to three months.
