Remember Me Thursday: a time to shine a light on orphan pets waiting in shelters for humans to love forever. To celebrate and raise awareness on the importance of pet adoption, we asked you lovely lot to tell your pup’s rescue tales so we could spread the message together.

And as ever, you didn’t disappoint. For the chance to be featured and to win a donation to an animal charity of your choice, many of you shared utterly moving stories that truly warmed our hearts - the impact of opting to adopt really is beyond compare! So here, we’re shining a light on just a few of your touching tales (trust us, it was no easy task choosing between them!). Starting off is our lovely member, Susan, telling us about her adorable Maggie’s rescue story - tissues at the ready…

Back in 2020, Susan had her heart set on welcoming a new pup into her home. And as if it was written in the stars, it was nothing less than love at first sight…

“We had begun the adoption process when we saw the pictures of the animals due to be on the next transport and we chose two that were smaller dogs that we wanted to meet. So on the arrival Saturday we anxiously awaited the arrival along with many others. Our intake person arranged to meet us with both the dogs we had picked and when Maggie came into the room she immediately went to my husband (the one who was less sure we should be getting a dog) and jumped on his lap and licked his face. She wasn’t going to get down. She allowed me to pet her too so I guess we were sold then! And after all the paperwork she went right with us to her new home and settled on a couch in the sunroom which became “her” spot.”

So, why was little Maggie up for adoption in the first place? Well like many rescue pets, the poor pup didn’t have the best start in life.

“Maggie was rescued down south from a puppy mill.  She had already had a litter of puppies before she was two years old. She had obviously been mistreated as she was scared of men and had places on her body where you couldn’t touch her.  She was brought up to Connecticut through Dog Star Rescue in Bloomfield CT. [...] She definitely was food starved and to this day gobbles her food and treats.”

Luckily for Susan and her husband, easing Maggie into their loving home was easy. Fitting like a paw-shaped glove, Maggie clearly loved her new pet parents from the off.

“Maggie was immediately secure with us but she had to have time to be friendly with other people. [...] Maggie is the most loving and cuddly dog we’ve ever had. She is always next to one of us. Since we are senior citizens we are home with her a lot and take long walks that she loves. [...] Maggie is either sleeping under her Dad‘s work desk or by my chair if I’m reading or working on a project. If I am cooking she is right under my feet!”

Like with any mistreated animal, helping Maggie adjust to local pooch life hasn’t always been a walk in the park.

“Maggie is not very dog-friendly on walks but has learned not to cower or bark and sometimes even shows a little interest. She walked into my daughters house and immediately became the “in charge” dog over a very friendly, but large chocolate lab and a small cat.  She loves to sit on our deck and watch the dogs go by.  We are still working on people skills!”

Despite her slight aversion to other four-legged friends, Maggie loves her humans, and even took well to a pet sitter.

“Just this past summer we used a pet sitter from TrustedHousesitters and it couldn’t have worked out any better. He was just the right person for her. He was able to work from home and took her on long walks. I think they bonded very nicely.”

Maggie is right at home with her new humans!

Showering their new pup with all the love she deserves, it’s safe to say that Maggie has become the best furry family member the couple could have wished for.

“I do not know how I would have made it through the Covid lockdown without my constant companion. She was always there for me when I was feeling lonely. And having to take her out for walks made us have to get out of the house!”

When our lovely member, Karen, was walking in Spain with her husband, she heard a dog barking. Following the noise, she found a poor pup abandoned in a crate, left under a bush. Read Bella’s touching story and how Karen and her husband went the extra mile to turn her life around.
