Living in North Somerset with a furry friend, or perhaps you’re spending time as a pet sitter house sitting in Weston-super-Mare? This seaside town has a real soft spot for pups, and there’s no shortage of places where wagging tails are welcome.

From sandy beaches perfect for a game of fetch to cosy pubs that always have a biscuit behind the bar, this guide rounds up the very best of dog-friendly Weston-super-Mare.

Dog-friendly pubs in Weston-Super-Mare

There’s something special about enjoying a pint (or a lemonade!) in a pub after a walk with your four-legged friend, and Weston-super-Mare has plenty of places where pups are made to feel right at home. While most pubs are at least dog-friendly outside, here’s a selection of the best spots in town that welcome pooch pals throughout.

Captain’s Cabin Pub

You can enjoy unbeatable views across Weston Beach and the Severn Estuary from the outdoor area here, or head inside to the bar area – both with Fido in tow. Expect a warm welcome, a solid range of beers, ales, and wines, and hearty pub dishes that hit the spot.

Location: 51 Birnbeck Rd, Weston-super-Mare BS23 2EF

Fork ‘n’ Ale Taproom & Kitchen

This cosy taproom has a nice choice of seating, a selection of board games, and canine visitors are treated to a biscuit or two. They serve comfort food like burgers, dirty fries, and mac ‘n’ cheese, as well as Sunday roasts.

Location: 18 Walliscote Rd, Weston-super-Mare BS23 1UG

The Ship Inn

Tucked away in the pretty village of Uphill, The Ship Inn is thought to be Weston’s oldest pub. Pups are welcome both indoors and out, and you’ll find a mix of locals, walkers, and cyclists dropping in for a pint or a meal. The menu includes all the pub favourites like burgers, pizzas and jacket potatoes, plus local cider on tap.

Location: 56 Uphill Way, Uphill, Weston-super-Mare BS23 4TN

Duke of Oxford

This is a pub for proper home-cooked food accompanied by a selection of beers, wines and spirits. Furry friends can enjoy water and treats while their humans dig into fish of the day, grilled meats, burgers, and veggie dishes.

Location: 27 Oxford St, Weston-super-Mare BS23 1TF

Black Cat Micro Pub

Although there’s no food menu here, you’ll find a great selection of real ales and ciders, plus music and hand-painted murals that add to the vibe. Despite the pub being, erm, cat-themed, dogs always get a biscuit here – just bear in mind space is limited, so furry friends must be on their best behaviour!

Location: 135 High St, Weston-super-Mare BS23 1HN

The Criterion

If you’re looking for a proper local’s pub, The Criterion is the one. It’s a little off the main drag, which means it tends to be quieter and full of regulars. Expect a good choice of ales and ciders, simple snacks, and old-school hospitality that makes you feel at home.

Landing Light

Pooch pals get a warm welcome here with water and treats, and humans can enjoy everything from burgers to pies and Sunday roasts. The standout dish is their “Best Ever Pub Pie,” created in collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Tom Shepherd.

The Old Inn

A short drive from the centre, The Old Inn is a country-style pub known for its award-winning food. There’s a dedicated dog-friendly area where pups are welcome to curl up while you enjoy seasonal dishes that are locally sourced and lovingly prepared.

Dog-friendly beaches in Weston-super-Mare

Few things make a pup’s tail wag faster than the promise of sand, sea, and space to run free – and the dog-friendly beaches in Weston-super-Mare deliver all three. Whether your pup loves a paddle, a game of fetch, or a relaxed stroll, you’ll find some of the best dog-friendly places in Weston-super-Mare below.

Weston-super-Mare Beach

Lined with cafes, restaurants, and arcades, Weston’s main beach is the heart of the town. It’s the perfect place to stretch your legs, and furry friends are welcome in certain areas throughout the year:

  • The area between Royal Sands and Uphill Beach
  • The area between the Grand Pier and Knightstone Island

Just keep in mind that from 1st May to 30th September, between 9 am and 7 pm, pups aren’t allowed on the central stretch between the Grand Pier and Royal Sands. If in doubt, follow the signs!

Uphill Beach

Once a bit of a local secret, Uphill Beach has become one of the most loved dog-friendly places in Weston, and for good reason. In 2023, it was crowned the UK’s Best Dog Walking Beach, and after going viral online, its reputation has spread far and wide. Despite its newfound fame, it remains quieter than the main beach, with plenty of space for zoomies, paddling, and peaceful strolls.

Sand Bay Beach

A few miles north of the main town lies Sand Bay Beach. Backed by dunes and surrounded by natural beauty, this long, open beach is ideal for off-lead exploring. It’s easily reached by car, the Number 1 bus, or on foot via Weston Woods.

Brean Down & the Brean Down Way

If you and your pooch pal are up for a bit of a challenge, Brean Down is the place to go. You’ll also find the historic Palmerston Fort at the far end of the peninsula.

Alternatively, for a longer adventure, follow the Brean Down Way, an eight-mile route linking Weston’s Grand Pier to Brean. The trail passes along the promenade and through the pretty village of Uphill before continuing past salt marshes, nature reserves and coastal farmland.

Walk to Uphill

Take a relaxed stroll from Weston’s promenade towards the village of Uphill. As you head south along the beach, you’ll soon spot the cliffs and marina. Climb the footpath to St Nicholas Church (famous for its roofless nave) and enjoy views of Somerset and Wales.

Bleadon Hill & Loxton

The Bleadon Hill circular walk offers panoramic views across the Somerset Levels, Crook Peak, and the Bristol Channel. You can choose between a shorter four-mile route or a longer seven-mile hike if you’re feeling energetic.

Location: Bleadon Hill, Uphill, Weston-super-Mare, BS24 9LW

The Grand Pier

Okay, so this one’s not exactly a ‘walk,’ but it’s worth a mention! Furry friends are now welcome on Weston’s Grand Pier, where you’ll find dog-friendly ice cream, water stations, and even a special “Doggy Grab Game.” Just remember to keep your pup on a lead and follow the rules – especially the one that says, “three barks and you’re out!”.

Tips for pet parents in Weston-super-Mare

  • Check tide times before beach walks. Weston’s tides come in fast and far – it’s part of what gives the beach its famous wide sands. Before heading out for a stroll, check the local tide timetable (displayed along the promenade and online via North Somerset Council) to avoid getting caught by incoming water or soft mud.
  • Use the free water bowls along the seafront. In warmer weather, you’ll spot dog water stations outside cafes and kiosks along Marine Parade and near the Grand Pier. Keep a collapsible bowl handy, but you’ll rarely need to search far for a refill.
