A dog eating a carrot

Carrots: tasty, healthy, and packed full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Plus, if what our moms told us is true, they might even help us to see in the dark!

But here’s a question: can dogs eat carrots, and if so, is it beneficial to include them in your pooch’s diet? Let’s have a look…

Can dogs eat carrot?

Yes! Carrots are non-toxic and safe for dogs to eat. Not only can our pooch pals safely snack on these crunchy veggies, they could also be a healthy addition to your doggy's treat selection - and lucky for them, as dogs seem to love them!

Can dogs eat raw carrots?

Yes! Raw carrots are safe for dogs to eat, they also provide a satisfying ‘crunch’ that dogs love!

Can dogs eat cooked carrots?

Yes, cooked carrots are also perfectly safe for dogs to eat, providing they have been cooked plain (with no oils or seasonings, which could be high in fat or contain potentially toxic ingredients).

Health benefits of carrots

Carrots are low in calories, but high in vitamins and minerals (such as beta-carotene, which helps to support healthy vision - ah, so that's what our moms meant!), potassium, fiber, and antioxidants. They can also help to promote a healthy heart, digestion, skin and coat health.

While your pooch should be getting all of their nutritional needs met from a complete and balanced diet, carrots can be great as an occasional healthy treat for your four-pawed pal (in fact, carrot is a common ingredient in many brands of commercial dog food!). As with most fruit and veggies, though, carrots are (surprisingly) high in sugar, so moderation is key!

Feeding your dog carrots

Both raw and cooked carrots are safe for pooches to eat (provided they are served plain and not cooked with any added oils or seasonings). However, they can pose a potential choking hazard, so it's important to prepare your pooch's carrots correctly. Firstly, be sure to wash them thoroughly and peel them to remove any dirt or pesticides, then cut them into small, bite-sized pieces before feeding them to Fido.

When it comes to how many carrots can a dog eat, as with anything, moderation is key. Carrots can be unhealthy for dogs if fed too often - they should be fed to your pooch only as an occasional, healthy treat and alongside a complete and balanced diet. As a rule of thumb (or paw!), treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog's diet - that includes things like carrots, as well as hide and dental chews.

As always, before introducing a new food into your dog’s diet, we'd always recommend speaking with your vet first for advice on your pooch's individual needs.
