Big Sur, CA, USA

There are lots of things to do in Big Sur if you're a fan of the great outdoors. With the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Santa Lucia Mountains on the other, this rugged stretch of California coast is a paradise for hikers and beach lovers. This remote area is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle, and it's even better enjoyed with animal companions.

If you're considering a pet sit, but are wondering what to do in Big Sur, we've got plenty of suggestions.

Big Sur attractions

Most Big Sur attractions involve lacing up your trainers – or slipping into your wetsuit – and getting out into the wild. These are some of the most unmissable places to visit.

1. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park: Nicknamed "Mini Yosemite", the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is well worth exploring. As it's further inland, it doesn't have the sweeping Pacific views that the region is renowned for. However, it does have plenty of incredible views of its own – especially of the mighty Big Sur River, which flows through the park's 1,600 acres. There are eight miles of trails to explore, with hikes to waterfalls and through wildflower meadows. Try the Pfeiffer Falls trail to see some of the park's best redwood groves, as well as a soaring 60 foot waterfall.

2. Partington Cove: The Partington Cove trail is one of Big Sur's most popular hikes. Just over a mile long, this out-and-back walking route takes you across wooden bridges and through redwood groves before opening out at the coast for breathtaking views of the ocean. If you're lucky you might spot sea otters frolicking in the waves below.

3. Old Coast Road: This 10 mile-long dirt road is all that's left of the original precursor to the famous Highway 1, which runs along the Monterey coast. This rugged track might not be as easy to drive as the highway – it's only got one lane and there are some tight bends – but it's definitely more atmospheric. Take it nice and slow and enjoy the captivating views of misty redwood forests, babbling brooks and the famous Bixby Creek Bridge.

Free things to do in Big Sur

The best things in life are free, and so are some of the best things to do in Big Sur. Whether you're travelling on a budget or just like to look after your pennies, these wallet-friendly ideas are sure to keep you happy.

1. Garrapata State Park: Enjoy Big Sur's incredible coastal views during a hike in Garrapata State Park. Wander along the two miles of beachfront before tackling the 50-foot climb. Your reward will be spectacular views of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary where you can see sea lions, harbour seals and otters playing. Keep your eyes peeled from November to April – you may see some California grey whales swim past.

2.  McWay Falls: One of the best things to see in Big Sur is McWay Falls. This 80-foot waterfall flows into the Pacific – emptying directly into the ocean during high tide. It's one of just two rare "tide falls" in California. Although you need to pay if you park in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, it's also possible to see it for free by parking on Highway One. Follow the McWay Falls Overlook Trail and cross under the road using the tunnel.

3. Bixby Creek Bridge: You can't visit Big Sur without taking time to see the iconic Bixby Creek Bridge. This high, concrete bridge was built in 1932 and is now one of California's most photographed bridges thanks to its spectacular location. The bridge spans a canyon, with rugged sea cliffs and the foreboding waves of the Pacific in the background. There are lots of viewpoints along Highway 1 where you can get the perfect shot for your socials.

Fun things to do in Big Sur

Some of the most fun things to do in Big Sur also involve being out and about. Whether you're up for a spot of surfing or just fancy wading through tide-pools, here are some of the most fun things to do in Big Sur.

1. Sand Dollar Beach: Big Sur's longest strip of unbroken sand – and one of the area's best surf spots – is one of the best places to enjoy the dramatic Pacific coast. If you don't fancy hiring a board and hanging ten, you can always join the many beachcombers searching for washed-up sand dollars and other seashells. Wander to the southern end of the beach to find rock formations studded with semi-precious minerals.

2. Limekiln State Park: This small but mighty state park sits on the USA's steepest coastal canyon and has direct beach access. Its two trails are both less than a mile long. One path leads to a 100-foot-tall waterfall, leading you past some of the county's oldest redwood trees. The other takes you to the old 17th Century limekilns from the days that the park was a major limestone mine. Some buildings in San Francisco are built with stone from this state park. Although the trails are short, they're also fun. Expect to clamber over logs, scramble up rocks and wade through rivers.

3. Pfeiffer Beach: This picturesque beach is home to one of the best things to see in Big Sur; the Pfeiffer Keyhole Arch. This rock formation sits out in the ocean, just off the shore. Wait until low tide and wade out to it, and take some time to spot the crustaceans and other sea creatures who live in the rock pools. Alternatively, turn up at sunset and watch as the sun shines brightly through the gap – the ultimate photo opportunity.

What to do in Big Sur with pets

If you're lucky enough to land a pet sit in Big Sur, there are lots of adventures to enjoy with your new buddy. If you're planning a hike, double-check who's in charge of the area you want to visit. Dogs aren't allowed on California State Park Trails, but are welcome on United States Forest Service (USFS) trails.

1. The Phoenix Shop at Nepenthe: Pooches are welcome to join you on shopping sprees at this quirky gift shop. It's a lovely place to find souvenirs to remind yourself of your time on California's coast. Browse paintings of Big Sur by local artists, buy skincare and soap crafted using local botanicals or treat yourself to handmade jewellery featuring local minerals like jade.

2. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park: While dogs aren't allowed to use the trails in this state park, they are welcome to join their humans on the paved roads within the Day Use area and campground. One of the best walks to try is The Warden's Path/River Path loop. This easy walk passes through one of Big Sur's famous redwood groves, where you might spot creatures like woodpeckers and squirrels.

3. Cruickshank Trail: Clocking in at just under five miles, this round-trip trek through the Silver Peak Wilderness isn't too difficult. That said, it will pose a nice challenge for you and your four-legged friend. The hike starts with a climb, rewarding you with sweeping Pacific views, before winding along a canyon and into the oak and redwood forest. Set aside roughly three hours to tackle it.
