Martha's Vineyard attractions

The unspoiled charm of Martha’s Vineyard attracts thousands of visitors every year, but aside from its nineteen beaches and delicious seafood, what are some of the best things to do in Martha’s Vineyard? We’ve selected our top three below:

1. Chappaquiddick Island: One of New England’s best kept secrets, Chappaquiddick Island is 18 beautiful miles of sandy beaches, serene walking paths and unspoiled nature. While you’re there you can hike, sunbathe, cycle, or picnic in a picturesque setting, and often all on your own in the peaceful surroundings.

2. Edgartown Lighthouse: Out of the five lighthouses on Martha’s Vineyard, Edgartown Lighthouse is the one visitors return to time after time. Aside from its long and varied history, the lighthouse attracts visitors thanks to its incredible panoramic views of the harbor and nearby Chappaquiddick Island.

3. "Jaws" Bridge: “No Jumping or Diving from Bridge” and, “Keep off Bridge Rail” are two signs you’ll see as you approach the iconic Jaws Bridge. The iconic film, shot in 1975 has seen the Jaws Bridge become famous in its own right. The wooden two lane bridge has a small bike path, benches and a walking area on both sides and sits a mere 12-15 feet above the salty water on Beach Rd.

Free things to do in Martha's Vineyard

Looking for things to do in Martha’s Vineyard that won’t cost a dime? From beaches to hiking, there’s no shortage of budget-friendly activities.

1. Martha's Vineyard Beaches: With nineteen beaches in total, there’s a sandy shore for everyone. From active surf beaches along the south side to the shallow waters of the northern sides, there’s plenty to choose from. Menemsha Hills has a rocky shoreline and scenic vistas, while the South Beach is perfect for chilling and taking in the sights. Take a nice long walk and enjoy the huge waves!

2. Aquinnah Cliffs: A popular spot at sunset, the epic clay cliffs are millions of years old and are so worth the trek if you want to see incredible views. Explore the lower beach paths to get a glimpse of the cliffs up close, or if you prefer, you can hike the upper trails to the top to see the historic lighthouse Gay Head Light and Elizabeth Islands.

3. Oak Bluffs Campground: Wondering what to do in Martha’s Vineyard that just oozes small town charm? The Oak Bluffs Campground is a whimsical spot lined with nineteenth-century homes perfectly painted with intricate filigree trim. Fondly referred to as the gingerbread houses, the quaint area will have you nostalgic for a bygone time.

Fun things to do in Martha's Vineyard

From the old-fashioned gingerbread houses to bustling hamlet towns, there’s an abundance of fun things to do in Martha’s Vineyard. Discover our favorites below:

1. Flying Horses Carousel: Located in the resort community of Oak Bluffs, the Flying Horses Carousel is America’s oldest operating platform carousel. The historic carousel underwent extensive restoration to return it to its former glory.

2. Oak Bluffs: Undoubtedly the liveliest of the Vineyard’s towns, Oak Bluffs is home to the picturesque gingerbread cottages, Ocean Park with its historic gazebo (ideal for kite flying) and Oak Bluffs Harbor, lined with mouthwatering restaurants and bars. Don’t miss all the shops, cafes and ice cream shops in the town center either.

3. Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary: Located in Edgartown, the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a hundred species of birds and other wildlife. There’s over four miles of trails to explore with incredible sights of the surrounding meadows, ponds and woodlands.

What to do in Martha's Vineyard with pets

There’s nothing better than a fun activity with your pooch. From sandy beaches to wild water experiences, there’s a joint activity you’ll both love.

1. Visit the beach: If you’re visiting during the off-season (from September 15th to March 31st), you and your pup are welcome to roam on most beaches on Martha’s Vineyard, including Eastville Point and Norton Point. Sadly, dogs aren’t allowed the rest of the year but you can still take a leisurely walk along Fuller Street Beach year-round.

2. Island Spirit Kayak: For something a bit more adventurous, you can join the crew at Island Spirit Kayak for a sunset paddleboard or kayaking tour. We only recommend this for water dogs (obvs), and provided the owner is happy for you to take their pup into the water. For added safety, pups are supplied with a personal flotation device (PFD).

3. Manuel F. Correllus State Forest: With over 5,300 acres of winding paths to explore, the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest has something for every ability. Hiking trails meander through the trees and a paved walkway lines the state forest, so there’s plenty of options for you and your pooch.
