Empire State and skyscrapers in New York City, United States

If you're wondering what to do in NYC today, we've got some suggestions. From hitting up famous attractions like Broadway and Times Square to exploring lesser-known gems perfect for dog lovers, we've got the lowdown on how to spend your time in the Big Apple.

New York City attractions

As one of the most iconic cities in the world, New York has no shortage of attractions. If this is your first visit to NYC then you really need to tick these off your list.

1. Broadway: Broadway is the beating heart of NYC's theatre district, and seeing a show there is a true "must-do" experience, whether you're traveling solo or with a group. Tickets can be pricey for big musicals like Hamilton, The Book of Mormon and Wicked, but there are a few ways to find cheaper deals. If you don't mind leaving things to the last minute, join the queue at TDF's TKTS Booths on Duffy Square for on-the-day tickets – sometimes at half price.

2. Times Square: Many of NYC's biggest attractions can be found in one neighbourhood – Times Square. Though it's known for its big flashy billboards, you could easily spend an entire day enjoying all of the different things to do. Head to the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Centre for sweeping views of the iconic skyline, or embrace the weird and wonderful at Ripley's Believe it or Not! museum.

3. Empire State Building: In a city filled with iconic skyscrapers, the Empire State Building is arguably the most famous. This huge art-deco landmark boasts two observation decks where you can enjoy an unrivalled view of the city skyline – on a clear day, the panoramic view stretches across six states. There are also exhibits to enjoy on your way to the top, showing off the skyscraper's history and the unique mark it's left on pop culture.

Free things to do in New York City

If you're on a tight budget, don't worry – there are lots of free things to do in NYC. People-watching in this eclectic city is always a joy, and these are some of the best places to go to soak up the vibe.

1. Central Park: Central Park is the green heart of Manhattan. It's played an iconic role in so many films and TV shows that we've lost count. It's a true all-season destination. During summer it's the place to go for a picnic, and during autumn a stroll along the colourful tree-lined avenues is a must. To really go back to nature, head to the Ramble. Winding trails, rocks and streams will make you feel like you're miles away from the city. Just remember to keep any doggy pals on their leash.

2. Brooklyn Bridge: One of the best free things to do in NYC is to take a stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge. It's just over one mile long so should take roughly half an hour to complete – unless you want to stop and get a few selfies with the Manhattan skyline, of course. Once you get to the other side you'll find yourself in one of Brooklyn's most hip neighbourhoods: Dumbo. Explore the quirky boutiques, art galleries and flea markets before grabbing a bite in one of the local pizzerias.

3. Fifth Avenue: This huge street stretches all the way from Lower Manhattan to Harlem. The Midtown section, between 49th and 60th streets, is one of the world's most expensive shopping streets. Window shopping is free, of course. This is where you'll find flagship stores of names like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada and Tiffany. As you stroll along, look out for iconic buildings like the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), New York Public Library and Rockefeller Centre.

Fun things to do in New York City

Finding fun things to do in the city that never sleeps isn't difficult. There are plenty of quirky attractions to keep you entertained during your stay. These are some of our favourites.

1. Harbour cruises: One of the best ways to see Manhattan's famous skyline is from the water. Thankfully there are lots of tour companies offering bay and harbour cruises. There's something to suit every taste, whether you want a speedy tour around the island or fancy stopping off at the Statue of Liberty for an hour or two. Dinner cruises offer a meal with a view, while sunset cruises are the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing.

2. Biking in Central Park: Cycling around Central Park is a fun and active way to spend an afternoon in NYC. It also means you get to see more of the green space than you might if you were on foot. Enjoy the wind in your hair as you glide between famous attractions like Strawberry Fields, Alice in Wonderland and the Bethesda Fountain. There are three official cycle routes through the park with a range of lengths – 6.2 miles, 5.2 miles and 1.7 miles.

3. Attend a game at Madison Square Garden or Yankee Stadium: Catching a ball game is an absolute must-do when you're in New York. Even if you're not a massive sports fan, it's a great way to soak up the culture and atmosphere – while sampling traditional stadium snacks. Different sports have different seasons. Depending on when you visit, you can watch games of baseball (April to October), basketball (October to April), ice hockey or American football. Madison Square Garden also hosts boxing matches.

What to do in New York City with pets

One of the best parts about pet sitting in New York City is getting to explore like a local, with a four-legged friend in tow. New Yorkers really love their dogs, so there are plenty of interesting things to do together.

1. Dog Runs: With an estimated 600 thousand dogs in New York City – and very few back gardens – it makes sense that there are some exceptional dog parks. Tompkins Square Dog Run has a sandy surface and a wading pool, while the TriBeCa dog run has high-tech sprinklers and big rocks to climb on. For a sombre moment, visit the Sirius Dog Run at Battery Park. It pays tribute to the beloved Labrador Retriever, Sirius: a Port Authority K-9 killed in the September 11th attacks.

2. William Secord Gallery: Get some canine culture at this unique art gallery on the Upper East Side. It's dedicated to 19th century dog and animal paintings, with a few contemporary pieces thrown in for good measure. Leashed pets are welcome, and are often served dog biscuits and water while you browse the art and collectibles.

3. Inwood Hill Park: The only remaining forest on the island of Manhattan is the perfect destination for a hike with your doggy pal. There are three trails to choose from, and a dedicated off-leash area known as Homer's Run. The main Inwood Hill Park Trail is an easy two miles long, with slight slopes to get you and your buddy breathing. Check out the rock formations and soaring oak and maple trees before stopping to admire the view over the Hudson River and the Palisades.

4. Dog cafes NYC: There are heaps of dog-friendly cafes over the city, but only a few actually allow dogs inside. Of those that do though, they're pretty pooch-mad. So, find our list of dog cafes in NYC that welcome their arms, and their doors to you and your four-legged friends.

Best restaurants in New York City

New York City is famous for its food and drink, and rightly so. Whether you're grabbing a pretzel from a street vendor or enjoying a fine dining meal with a view, there's something for every budget. These are some of the best restaurants in New York to visit during your house and pet sit.

1. Gramercy Tavern: If you're in the mood for a splurge, try this Michelin-starred restaurant in the Flatiron district. It's been a New York staple for well over two decades. The seasonal menu is always evolving, proudly showcasing produce from local farms and artisans. Settle in for an a la carte meal in the bustling tavern, or treat yourself to the five-course tasting menu in the elegant dining room.

2. Katz's Delicatessen: This Jewish delicatessen has a dedicated following of locals and tourists, thanks to its towering sandwiches piled high with home-cured corned beef and pastrami. Film buffs will recognise it from When Harry Met Sally (1989), when the diner plays a starring role in the movie's most famous scene. Join the queue, don't lose your ticket, and enjoy one of the best sandwiches in the world.

3. Time Out Market: Why go to just one restaurant when you could go to a whole bunch at once? This waterfront food hall offers a hand-picked line-up of some of the city's most acclaimed chefs. Enjoy elevated Mexican cuisine from Ivy Stark, Indian street food from Chote Miya and southern comfort foods from Jacob's Pickles. Pets are welcome on the 5th-floor rooftop terrace as well as the outdoor seating area on Old Dock Street.
