Looking for ways to get Fido involved in the festive fun? Well, to all of you who agree that December really is the most wonderful time of the year, we’re sure you also believe that the Christmas magic isn’t just for Christmas day. No, Christmas is about the whole of December (and maybe even November!) - it’s about cozy evenings in with the tree twinkling, comfort food on the stove and your furry best friend snuggled by your side.

But how can you make your pooch part of the Christmas magic? If you’re welcoming a pet sitter this Christmas and looking for ways to help Fido feel festive, along with dog gifts for Christmas, how about jazzing up your home with some Christmas doggy decor?

As ever, we’re here to help, and this time it’s to build a pooch-approved winter wonderland, fit for your (canine) king. Below find dog Christmas decorations, outdoor Christmas dog decorations and DIY decor, perfect for honoring your precious pooch and their part in the festive fun.

DIY dog Christmas decorations

1. Paw print salt dough Christmas tree decorations

Salt dough decorations are all the rage, and we can see why! Simple and fun to make, they’re fab if you’re looking for ways to entertain the little people in your life - just make sure no one takes a nibble on the sly, these ‘cookies’ are NOT made for eating (but these ones are)! So without further ado, here’s a quick salt dough recipe…

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup cold water

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C).
  2. Mix the flour and salt in a bowl, then slowly add the water, mixing as you go, until a dough is formed. Knead the dough for 10 minutes, then let it rest for 20.
  3. Turn out the dough onto a floured surface, knead again, then roll out into around half an inch thick. Cut out the dough with a festive mold, and make any festive indentations. As we’re all about the doggy Christmas decor, how about imprinting your pup’s paw and carefully writing their name? Either way, be sure to create a hole at the top, ready for threading ribbon and hanging on your tree.
  4. Bake in the oven (on a lined baking sheet) for around 2 hours or until hard. Let them cool fully before painting!

2. Clay bone Christmas tree decoration

If you’re a dab hand with clay or you simply fancy challenging yourself, invest in a block of clay, roll it out and cut into festive shapes before baking it in the oven.

3. ‘Gingerbread’ kennel house

Or maybe real baking that you can tuck into is more your thing! Rather than your usual gingerbread house this year, how about a gingerbread kennel, decorated with all things canine? Or seriously challenge yourself and make it out of homemade dog biscuits!

4. Pipe cleaner tree decorations

If you’re into self-made crafts but you don’t have the time for anything too taxing, turn your hand to the humble pipe cleaner (those with a pointed end tend to look more effective, if you can get hold of them).

Simply print out a picture of your pooch, cut out their adorable face and shape your pipe cleaners below to make the body, then stick together. Tie a little ribbon or string through the top of the photograph, and you’ve got yourself a simple, very homemade-looking decoration - a great one to try with young children.

5. Paw-shaped snowflake chain

Snowflake chains are snow last year! Change things up this Christmas with a paw-shaped ‘snowflake’ chain, using the same technique as usual. They’re simple to put together, ideal for keeping little ones entertained, and look super cute around doorways or even around your Christmas tree.

Pre-made dog Christmas decorations

Dog Christmas decor is so much better when it’s also edible, especially from your pup’s perspective! So, rather than your average baubles this year, why not take a look for decorations that stock your pooch’s favorite treats?!

2. Canine advent calendar

There are heaps of these on the market - some can be personalized, others are for treats, while lots are for toys. Whatever works for you, joining your pooch in with the countdown to Christmas is easy with a canine advent calendar.
