Bridge of Sights Cambridge

Did you know that the University of Cambridge dates all the way back to 1209? That the famous Trinity chapel was founded by the infamous Henry VIII? Or that Oliver Cromwell’s head is rumoured to be hidden in Sidney Sussex College?

Either way, we know you’re not here for trivia. But if you’re house sitting in Cambridge, we can confirm there’s heaps to learn and explore in this historic city (just take a look at all these things to do in Cambridge).

Along with its centuries-spanning architecture and academic prestige, one thing that Cambridge does seriously well is the humble pub, and they’ve got history to thank. While some a time capsule of years gone by, others hip and trendy and boast home-brewed tipples, many make things easier for pet parents and sitters alike, opening their arms to four-legged friends. So, take a pit stop in one of the most British ways possible and choose from our top picks of Cambridge’s dog-friendly pubs.

River Cam, Cambridge

Cambridge, UK

The Clarendon Arms

Address and map pin: 35-36 Clarendon St, Cambridge CB1 1JX

If you’re looking for a dog-friendly pub in Cambridge’s city centre, The Clarendon Arms should do the job. They’ve been open since 1812 and now serve the pub grub you’d hope for along with some slightly more upmarket options. This spot is ideal if you’re dog walking along the River Cam and need a truly British pit stop - book ahead if you’re staying for food, and tuck into one of their popular Sunday roasts. And now for the most important part! Your furry friend is very welcome here - they can roam wherever. The only rule is to keep your pooch pal on a lead, just to make sure they’re closeby and not attempting to nibble your neighbour’s chips.

The Free Press

Address and map pin: 7 Prospect Row, Cambridge CB1 1DU

Another ideal spot if you’re after dog-friendly pubs near Cambridge’s city centre, The Free Press is run by Cambridge-born siblings, Megan and Thomas Stepney. The pair proudly serve up a seasonal, locally sourced menu along with an impressive selection of award-winning beers and ales. Take refuge from the winter chills next to the pub’s open fires, or soak up the summer sunshine with your pooch by your side in the courtyard beer garden. And if you’re here for pubs but you can’t help yourself when it comes to trivia, we’ve got you covered. This pub was opened in 1834 by Sarah Horne, a home brewer who once lived in the cottage. Just as she was opening, the teetotal movement launched a publication called ‘The Free Press’ to promote their anti-drinking message. It turns out that Sarah had a sense of humour, as she named her pub after the paper in irony! Unlucky for the local teetotal movement, the paper only lasted its first issue, and the pub is still standing.

Fort St George

Address and map pin: Midsummer Common 11, Cambridge CB4 1HA

A very traditional dog-friendly pub in Cambridge, Fort St. George serves up reasonably-priced pub grub and welcomes your furry friend, of course. With Jesus Green, Midsummer Common and the River Cam (which there are beautiful views of from the pub, by the way) all within walking distance, this spot is perfect for a quick bar snack stop or sit down meal. Find inglenook fireplaces, panelling and tiled floor all typical of this grade II listed building which dates all the way back to the 16th century. So, if it’s a boiling day and you need a refreshment, chill in the beer garden by the river or get toasty by the fire in the winter months with your four-legged friend right by your side.

Clare Bridge, Cambridge

The Cambridge Brew House

Address and map pin: 1 King St, Cambridge CB1 1LH

Not all of Cambridge’s dog-friendly pubs are listed buildings with a quirky back story, though. Take The Cambridge Brew House - it’s the perfect spot if you’re passionate about beer and keen to check out Cambridge’s microbrewery scene but not so fussed about history. Bring your pooch pal along and give their signature cask beers – King’s Parade Best Bitter and Misty River Pale Ale - a go. If you’re just stopping by for a snack, head to the bar area to refuel. Otherwise, book a table and check out the larger menu, all freshly cooked and made with locally-sourced ingredients.

River Cam, Cambridge

The Blue Ball Inn

Address and map pin: 57 Broadway, Grantchester, Cambridge CB3 9NQ

Have you heard of Grantchester? It’s a small village just outside of Cambridge city centre. Sitting beside the River Cam, it’s home to thatched cottages, a Medieval church and lots of traditional pubs (the village, that is - not the pub). So, if you’re after a dog-friendly pub near Cambridge town that’s outside of the hustle and bustle, The Blue Ball should do the trick. It’s the oldest pub in Grantchester, dating back to 1767, so we can see why it was made famous and featured in the series Grantchester. And if you’re after a dog-friendly pub with rooms in Cambridge, you’ll find a place to stay here - between dog sitting of course! This pub strives to stick to its traditional roots, serving hearty classics and steering clear of anything remotely bistro.

Jesus Green, Cambridge

The Mill

Address and map pin: 14 Mill Ln, Cambridge CB2 1RX

Another fab spot for views over the River Cam, The Mill is a homely pub central to the city and perfect for quenching your thirst or a chilled-out lunch with your four-legged pal. And whatever the season, The Mill has it covered. In the summer, take your drinks and food outside to soak up the sun next to the Millpond or cosy up inside during winter with a glass of mulled wine. And if you’re into your music, check out this pub’s radiogram and vinyl collection for a trip down memory lane.

The Mill, Cambridge

The Earl of Beaconsfield

Address and map pin: 133 Mill Rd, Cambridge CB1 3AA

Looking for an ideal spot for fetch or walkies? Head to Romsey Recreation Ground or Coleridge Recreation Ground before refuelling at The Earl of Beaconsfield. Unlike the other pubs we’ve explored so far, this joint is home to a variety of gigs, so the ideal dog-friendly spot if you’re after somewhere to kick back and enjoy live music. And of course, find all your classic tipples as well as real ales and craft beers.

King's College Chapel, Cambridge University

The Haymakers

Address and map pin: 54 High St, Chesterton, Cambridge CB4 1NG

The Haymakers is another dog-friendly pub near Cambridge’s city centre, offering a traditional pub menu and drinks. But, if old-school pub grub isn’t your thing, not to worry. This spot has jumped on the fresh pizza hype, offering Sicilian-style pizzas ideal for a refuel after a lengthy game of fetch. With the river and recreation grounds perfect for walkies nearby, The Haymakers will tick all the boxes if you’re after a standard beer selection and a quick bite to eat.

Footpath between Midsummer common and Jesus Green, Cambridge

The Red Lion Grantchester

Address and map pin: 33 High St, Grantchester, Cambridge CB3 9NF

Cameras at the ready! The Red Lion is in the quaint village of Grantchester, so of course it’s completely beautiful - just check out that thatched roof! It’s a two-minute walk from Grantchester Meadows, and a 20-minutes stroll along The Cam River from Cambridge town. Stop with your fluffy pal for drinks, seasonal (and of course, locally sourced) menu and a wind down in the country garden. Choose from bar snacks, small plates, sharers and meals all to yourself. Kick back in their deck chairs or get competitive with a human pal with a spot of table tennis.

Path between Cambridge town and Grantchester

The Corner House

Address and map pin: 231 Newmarket Rd, Cambridge CB5 8JE

Stop by The Corner House, a dog-friendly Cambridge pub serving up hearty classics like pies, sausage and mash, and of course, fish and chips. If the classics aren’t your thing, this spot also serves up Mediterranean dishes and other classics from around the world, as well as seafood on weekends and stone-baked pizzas alongside daily-changing specials.
