A horse sitter is a trusted person who will care for your hooved household whilst you’re away. Like a farmhand, they’re responsible for your horse’s happiness and wellbeing when you have to be away from the stables or paddock. Hiring a horse sitter might seem like the best option for many pet parents, but how much should you pay for one?
Before you put the cart before the horse, let’s look at what’s hot-to-trot price wise when it comes to horse sitting. What do these costs cover, and what the other options might be for that are more cost effective? Let’s start with the mane question: How much do you pay for horse sitting?

The average horse sitting rate
On average, you’ll be looking at about $100 (£100 / €100) a day for a traditional horse sitting service, and an additional $10 fee (£8-10, €10) if you have more than one or two horses. Some places may add on an extra $10-15 (£10 / €10) for grooming and exercise, meaning you could be looking at about $130 (£130 / €130) a day.
The going rate for horse sitting at a boarding facility will be about the same price, but could potentially cost a few bucks, depending on where they’re located and the time of year.
These costs generally cover everything from mucking out, feeding, health checks, and enrichment. Horse sitters are experienced professionals who will watch over your precious pony while you’re away. They’ll be able to alert you if there’s something wrong, make sure your horse is safe and secure day and night, and offer a bit of human interaction each day.
